Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS)

Important information about compensation arrangements

We are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). The FSCS can pay compensation to depositors if a credit union is unable to meet its financial obligations. Most depositors; including most individuals and small businesses; are covered by the scheme.

In respect of deposits, an eligible depositor is entitled to claim up to £50,000.

For joint accounts each account holder is treated as having a claim in respect of their share so, for a joint account held by two eligible depositors, the maximum amount that could be claimed would be £50,000 each (making a total of £100,000). The £50,000 limit relates to the combined amount in all the eligible depositor’s accounts with the credit union, including their share of any joint account, and not to each separate account.

For further information about the scheme (including the amounts covered and eligibility to claim) please ask at your local branch, refer to the FSCS website http://www.fscs.org.uk/ or call 0800 678 1100.

Scottish Financial Inclusion Services Launch

Pollok Budgeting Service and Castlemilk Budgeting Service, recognising the detrimental long term effects of financial exclusion and problem debt on families and the community as a whole, produced the idea for a comprehensive solution to this problem in the form of the Scottish Financial Inclusion Services (SFIS).   Funding from the Scottish Executive has enabled the development of this brand new organisation.

On Friday 4th August, the Scottish Financial Inclusion Services held its launch in Leithland Neighbourhood Centre, in Pollok.  The launch was attended by representatives of money advice agencies, social work departments and local development companies.

The launch provided an opportunity for those attending to find out about SFIS.  As SFIS will be working on a referral basis with the above organisations, it is very important that they understand the aims of SFIS and how we will operate.

The event was a great success, everybody seemed to enjoy the afternoon; especially the complimentary buffet and wine provided!

Pollok Credit Union Working in Partnership With Greater Glasgow Health Board

The health board has been holding monthly Weaning Fairs offering advice and support for new mothers. The Credit Union is delighted to participate in these information events giving advice to mum’s on the many benefits of being a member of Pollok Credit Union. The Weaning Fairs take place all over Glasgow and the latest event was held on 31st May 2006 at the Victory Church in Govan.

A presentation was given by our Director Jim Garrity who introduced the credit union’s principles, functions and how we serve the local & wider community. The event was attended by 50 mothers along with their new babies. More than 30 information packs were given out on the day along with details of our thriving junior account for children aged 0-16 years. The mothers were also encouraged to take advantage of the Child Trust Fund that is available for their children from our credit union.

We hope to see many of these young children as junior savers with Pollok Credit Union in the near future.
