The common bond at the time covered all those who lived in the Pollok,
Corkerhill and Crookston areas, roughly a population base of 12,000 residents. The Board
of Directors who are volunteers, managed all aspects of the Credit Union from book-keeping,
loan interviews, sending quarterly and annual returns to the Registry of Friendly Societies
and also manning the collection points.
In 1999 we expanded our common bond to cover all those who either lived
or worked in the Greater Poliok area. This included a population base of
38,000 residents and also those who were employed by the 246 firms in
the Greater Pollok area. To date we have managed to secure the workforce of the largest employer in the area, Siemens, on payroll deductions and
we are also able to offer members the facility to pay by standing order if they wish.
Also in 1999 we secured funding for two members of staff which helped
enormously in developing the Credit Union and with the addition of
collection points in Darnley, Arden and Kennishead our membership substantially
increased. In 2002 we opened a new collection point within the Pollok
Shopping Centre that has given the Credit Union a higher profile in the area.
Pollok Credit Union have come a long way since 1993 but the aims and objectives
remain the same. We strive to bring a service to our members that allows them to save
regularly and to borrow at a low rate of interest while keeping to the basic principles
of the worldwide credit union movement.
A note of thanks is due to the first officers of the Credit Union, who, through their
vision, enthusiasm and commitment strived to bring the benefits of a credit union to
the residents of the Greater Poliok area.
